Stephanie Snyder's site-specific installation, Hamakom (The Place), is at its heart a personal response to the essences and contradictions of Jerusalem's Western Wall. Created through a process deeply influenced by Jewish ritual, it is a poetic re-imagining of sacred space.
Stephanie Snyder is a San Francisco-based artist who works in mixed-media, painting, and video. She holds a B.A. from Reed College (1991) and a master's degree from Columbia University (1998). Her installations and drawings have been exhibited in the United States at spaces such as ABC NoRio, the Staller Center for the Arts at SUNY Stony Brook, and the Brecht Forum. Upon graduating from Reed she was the recipient of a year-long Fellowship from the Thomas J. Watson Foundation. In addition to her artistic practice, Snyder is a curator and essayist. Her curatorial projects include: "Being and Belonging: Reflections on Jewish Space, shown at the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture, Mar–Apr, 2003; and Performing Judaism, shown at the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College, Portland, Oregon, Jan–Mar, 2002.
